The town is situated in North Bulgaria in the valley of the river Yantra it is surrounded by hills and forests. The old town of Veliko Tarnovo has particularly amazing medieval architecture with lovely ancient picture book stone roofed houses which look like they are sitting on top of each other like birds nests. The most significant cultural monument in Veliko Tarnovo is the medieval fortress Tsarevets, which is surrounded on three sides by the river Yantra. On certain nights the Tsarevets is the centre for an audio-visual performance, this “Sound and Light” show represent the glorious and tragic history of Bulgaria by lights, music and lasers. It is a special and unique attraction for the country. Samovodska Charshia is the craft street; it is a kind of an ethnographic complex with souvenir shops and galleries. Gurko Street is another beautiful and significant street that gives the chance of the visitors to discover the beauty of the cobble street and some views towards the “Asenovci” monument, the hills and the winding river. There are many picturesque eco paths in the surrounding for lovers of exploring and walking, the beautiful Emen path, Preobrazhenska path, Trinity path, Hotniza waterfall, Nikopolis atistrum. As a result of its location in the Yantra gorge, the Tarnovo region is the second biggest area for rock climbing. It also offers mountain bike cycling, horse riding, finishing, swimming, kayaking, paragliding and a whole host of outdoor pursuits in beautiful surroundings. The town is also well known for its night life catering for all tastes from sophisticated to clubbers. There are many excellent restaurants, bars and night clubs to suit all tastes. There are two universities that bring many young people to Veliko Tarnovo making it a lively, cosmopolitan and very safe place. Veliko Tarnovo is well known as the Tourist capital of Bulgaria. The town is particularly well setup to cater for tourists and the tourist numbers are increasing year on year. The tourist ratings of Veliko Turnovo are consistently high and the town boasts a high percentage of returning tourists. |
