 Spartacus & Orpheus  The state of Bulgaria has almost a 1,300 year old history and on its land are the signs of many ancient civilizations and scores of archaeological monuments. Bulgaria has produced many famous citizens and today has its share of modern celebrities but it is perhaps best known as the land that gave a birth to many ancient heroes, warriors and conquerors like Spartacus – the Thracian gladiator, Orpheus- the incredible musician and singer and many others. Spartacus was born on the territory of present-day town of Sandanski (south-western Bulgaria) and as an adolescent was sold into slavery in ancient Rome. Later he became the legendary gladiator that led the biggest slave uprising in ancient history. Orpheus was known for his incredible talent as a musician and singer. He was born shortly before the Trojan wars and near the present village of Guella in the Rhodope Mountains. Legend has it that he was the greatest singer of all time and even the wild animals stopped to listen to his music, he took part in the quest of the Argonauts together with Jason and Heracles. |
