Baba Marta Celebration
Baba Marta
On the 1st of March Bulgaria celebrates one of its most traditional holidays - Baba Marta (Grandma March), which marks the beginning of Spring.
On that day everybody is greeting the others by saying Chestita Baba Marta (Happy Baba Marta).
A Martenitsa is worn; this is usually in the form of a wrist band, woven by combining red and white colored threads. It is worn on that day and all through March, until a bloomed tree or a stork is seen.
Martenitsa are given away to friends and family. In villages in the mountains people decorate their houses, kids and animals.
The red stands for life, for the birth and white stands for clear grounds. Combined together, they mean a new beginning and rebirth.
The legend is that the Martenitsa tradition has been inspired by Bulgaria's first Khan Asparuh, who sent a white string to his wife to tell her he survived a battle.
People take off Martenitsa when they see a stork or a bloomed tree. They tie it to a tree that they would like to be fruitful.
