Women’s Day (Mother’s Day) is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Bulgaria. Ladies are honored with greetings, given flowers, possibly small gifts and treated to lunch. Men bring flowers to their female colleagues, men to their wife or lady friends. On that day there is an atmosphere of celebration in Bulgaria and no one actually works on that day.
The Celebration in Bulgaria
In Bulgaria Women's Day became officially recognised as a holiday after 1944 when the Communists seized control. Originally during Communism some factories celebrated the role of women in Bulgarian cultural, scientific, production and social life. After 1960 it became a much more festive event. Women's Day is respected by all and men are expected to give flowers to every woman in their life and this doesn't just mean mothers, wives and daughters but business colleagues and friends. Even the kids in school are taught special poems to tell their mothers. Indeed, this day is the one day of the year where the streets of every town, city and village are full with flower vendors who for this day charge higher prices.
